The vehicle was converted from gas to electric in November of 2001. It has been driven as a commuter vehicle full-time. It has a range of about 30 miles and is charged daily. It costs about $30 a month to charge. The motor is a 28 HP Advanced DC motor designed specifically for electric vehicle (EV) conversions. The batteries are 6 volt deep cycle - basically what you'd find in a golf cart. There are 20 batteries that are wired in series to obtain the necessary 120 volts DC to operate the motor. The batteries are replaced about every two years. The vehicle can operate at freeway speeds and does almost daily. As a zero emission vehicle, it can be driven in the diamond lane anytime as a single occupant. The total conversion cost was about $9,000 before a check of $900 from the IRS and any money recovered from selling the stock engine.
