Acura's MDX received a welcome ground-up reworking last year. The last generation MDX was a class leader when it debuted way back in 2000, but it was soon eclipsed by newer competitors. The new-for-2007 MDX received Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), which endowed the chunky sport-ute with an on-road-biased chassis balance&mdash plus surprising levels of grip. (The old VTM-4 system was heavily based toward medium off-road duty and ice/snow situations.) An optional adjustable magnetic damper system, similar to those used by General Motors and Ferrari, is particularly adept at taking the edge off severe bumps without compromising handling. On dry pavement, the MDX is almost as agile as the BMW X5, and it bests both the V-6 Cayenne and the X5 in terms of ride and utility. A smooth V-6 offers a broad torque band (90 percent of the engine's grunt is available from 2500 rpm), and it delivers decent fuel economy. Acura doesn't offer a V-8 engine in the MDX, but the vehicle doesn't seem to cry out for one.
